Endometriosis and Pregnancy: Important Facts

Cells that grow outside of a woman’s uterus are called endometrial cells. These types of cells are considered endometriosis because they are abnormal and can affect a woman’s body in an abnormal way. It is uncertain what cause this formation of cells. Women usually shed these types of cells each month when they are going through their menstrual cycle. Endometriosis cells can attach themselves to a woman’s ovaries. These cells are not cancerous but they can cause problems for a woman who wishes to get pregnant. Endometriosis and pregnancy are two words that a fertile woman does not want to hear together from their physician.

Infertility

Female Infertility

Women usually do not know if they have endometriosis because there are very few signs. If you are a woman though, who has been having pelvic pain, you will want to consult with your physician as soon as possible. Pelvic pain is one sign that you may have endometriosis. Your physician will do a laparoscopic exam to determine if you have endometriosis or not. This condition can cause infertility in women. Endometriosis and pregnancy are hard to make compatible when a woman wants to have a baby. Once a woman finds out that they have this condition, they may want to take further steps to help them get pregnant.

Reproduction and Endometriosis

Endometriosis and pregnancy are not a good combination when a woman is thinking about reproduction. A woman’s reproductive system consists of a woman’s uterus and two Fallopian tubes. When a woman has been diagnosed with endometriosis, abnormal cells can leave scarring or tissue masses that may have formed within the pelvic area where the uterus is located. This type of scarring and excessive tissue mass may affect anatomical parts of the female reproductive system. It can interfere with an egg being fertilized and traveling through your Fallopian tubes. If your Fallopian tubes get harmed your fertilized egg cannot reach your uterus to be implanted.

Surgery and Vitro Fertilization

Your physician may recommend surgery as a treatment for your endometriosis, if you want to become pregnant and are having trouble getting pregnant because of your condition. This type of surgery will remove any and all endometrial cell masses. It will also remove scar tissue in the Fallopian tubes and other reproductive organs. Surgery will not affect a woman’s reproductive organs. It will actually assist a woman in getting pregnant. Another treatment a physician may advise is vitro fertilization to help with a woman’s endometriosis and pregnancy. This treatment can be done while a woman has endometriosis.

Medications

For a woman who wishes to get pregnant, medications to treat endometriosis is not a good idea. These medications actually keep a woman from conceiving. They stop a woman from having her menstrual period. Medications of this type are only used to help with pain and some of them are considered contraceptives. A woman should ask her physician what other treatments will work for her pertaining to endometriosis and pregnancy.
